Similar as previous years, talk with your (child's) building administrator if interested in being part of the committee. We are looking for one staff and parent representative from each building.

BCC Ground Rules

1. Review Byron Strategic Plan
2. Review the calendar input survey results
3. Efforts to include stakeholders throughout the process were achieved
4. Respect, hear and seek understand all viewpoints
5. Address issues, not people
6. Creativity is encouraged and valued
7. Ask questions in a positive way
8. BCC chair is the final authority in resolving disputes or clarifying ambiguities
9. Group consensus will the be the model for decision-making on the calendar options presented to the Board
10. Avoid win/lose and either/or propositions if possible
11. It is understood, the school board makes the final decision on recommendations from Superintendent

Minnesota State Law

Length of School Year and Hours of Instruction

• A school board's annual school calendar must include at least:
  • 850 hours for all-day kindergarten,
  • 425 hours of instruction for a kindergarten student without a disability,
  • 935 hours of instruction for a student in grades 1 through 6, and
  • 1,020 hours of instruction for a student in grades 7 through 12, not including summer school.
• A school board's annual calendar must include at least 165 days of instruction for a student in grades 1 through 11 unless a four-day week schedule has been approved by the commissioner under section 124D.126.
  • BPS Current Length of School Year and Hours of Instruction :
    • The Minnesota Automated Reporting Student System (MARSS) Manual provides a definition on the length of day. Length of school day excludes meal times. At the secondary level, passing time may be included. At the elementary level, a supervised recess after lunch may be included in the length of day.
    • 172 student contact days
    • all-day kindergarten: 1060 hours (850 needed)
    • 1st - 2nd: 1060 hours (935 needed)
    • 3rd - 5th: 1103 hours (935 needed)
    • 6th: 1146 hours (935 needed)
    • 7th - 8th: 1089 hours (1020 needed)
    • 9th - 12th: hours 1089 (1020 needed)
  • The calendar will also recognize the compensation time for Parent-Teacher conferences as the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the last day or the Monday of spring break

State Testing

• Throughout the school year students are engaged in various types of testing . One is the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA) and alternate assessment Minnesota Test of Academic Skills (MTAS) are the state tests that measure student progress toward Minnesota’s academic standards and also meet federal and state legislative requirements. These tests occur in the spring and we will take this into consideration when developing our calendar for the best possible testing environment.

• Classes may not be scheduled at independent school districts on the days listed below. When the holiday falls on a Saturday, the prior Friday is considered the holiday. When the holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is considered the holiday.
