Byron Calendar Committee (BCC)

The district calendar is designed to support the goals of the district's strategic plan. The BCC will gather and review data and stakeholder input regarding employee work calendars, student school year start/end dates, and holiday break schedules for 2022-2023. The committee will use this data to develop calendar options to make a recommendation to the superintendent. The superintendent will review the recommendation and make a final recommendation to the Byron School Board for approval.

Length of School Year and Hours of Instruction
- A school board's annual school calendar must include at least:
- 850 hours for all-day kindergarten,
- 425 hours of instruction for a kindergarten student without a disability,
- 935 hours of instruction for a student in grades 1 through 6, and
- 1,020 hours of instruction for a student in grades 7 through 12, not including summer school.
- A school board's annual calendar must include at least 165 days of instruction for a student in grades 1 through 11 unless a four-day week schedule has been approved by the commissioner under section 124D.126.

- The Minnesota Automated Reporting Student System (MARSS) Manual provides a definition on the length of day. Length of school day excludes meal times. At the secondary level, passing time may be included. At the elementary level, a supervised recess after lunch may be included in the length of day.

- The calendar will also recognize the compensation time for Parent-Teacher conferences as the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the last day or the Monday of spring break

State Testing
- Throughout the school year students are engaged in various types of testing . One is the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA) and alternate assessment Minnesota Test of Academic Skills (MTAS) are the state tests that measure student progress toward Minnesota’s academic standards and also meet federal and state legislative requirements. These tests occur in the spring and we will take this into consideration when developing our calendar for the best possible testing environment.

- Classes may not be scheduled at independent school districts on the days listed below. When the holiday falls on a Saturday, the prior Friday is considered the holiday. When the holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is considered the holiday.
